Raised Garden Beds

Raised bed gardening offers many benefits such as improved soil conditions, higher yields, ease of access, extended growing season, and better pest control. Raised beds can be set up almost anywhere—with less effort than digging and regardless of soil conditions—to produce the best crop yields. This makes them ideal for a wide range of applications from backyard gardens to urban rooftop gardens, agricultural gardens, school gardens, community gardens, and more.

We supply the kits to make building a raised bed as easy as possible. Just level ground, stack boards, and insert corner pins to create a long-lasting bed for your flowers and vegetables.

The Timber

Made of kiln-dried Port Orford Cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, also known as Lawson cypress), the timber is strong, fragrant, light-coloured, even texture, rot resistant, untreated (doesn't need to be) and is ideal for this application. The wood has natural oils that help protect against moisture and microorganisms.

Our beds are modular allowing for many different sizes & shapes to be built.

Using our standard length board (60cm, 90cm, 120cm, 150cm and 180cm) they are easily joined to make longer beds in multiples of these sizes.

Each board is 14cm high which means the raised garden bed heights can be 14cm, 28cm, 42cm, 56cm, 70cm and 84cm.

The raised garden bed boards are held together by aluminium pins in the corners and joins making them easy to assemble (tool free) and can disassembled. The clearance between the hole in the timber and aluminium pin allows the wood to expand and contract without weakening the joints, also minimizing splitting/cracking.

Pest Control

If you need to support some fencing/netting to keep animals out such as dogs, possums etc, you may want to consider getting longer pins supplied. (See photo).

Economy Grade Boards (Seconds)

We often have a number of boards available that don't quite meet our "standard grade" quality. Normal reasons are that they either have one corner/edge missing, the face doesn't clean up, more knots than normal or slightly outside our straightness requirement (4mm over 1.8m).

These boards are the same timber, just as functional and discounted by 10%. When the imperfection is installed on the inside/underside you wouldn't be able to tell the difference when filled.

Covering

Should you want shade cloth, plastic cover or similar over the bed the longer pins also provide substancial support for a framework. (See photo).

Rounded End Boards

Utilising these you can construct different shapes, but commonly used for features such as hexagonal or octagonal raised beds. They can make a great feature garden bed around the trunk of a tree.

The board sizes are 30cm long, 45cm long, 60cm long and 90cm long.
